I tried to change the master cylinder on my 70 RR yesterday and found it more difficult then I had anticipated. Had been awhile since I attempted brake work of any kind. How do you remove the master cylinder without taking down the steering column or pulling the dash cluster? I could get 3 of the 4 bolts but the last was so obscured there was no chance with a 3/8 deep well and u-joint. Should I be trying to remove the reinforcing plate instead?
:dunno:
I was able to bleed the system and get them to function with the old master cylinder. Since I mainly want brakes just to drive it around every so often on backroads and in the shop just to keep it lubed up I think this is fine for now. It is sitting in storage waiting for me to win the lottery so I can restore it.
:burnout:

Apparantly it is manual drum brakes? I thought that they could all be accesed with a long extension and a wobbly socket.

Yes, it is a manual brake car. I should have clarified that. The upper bolt closest to the passenger seat was blocked by the brake assembly frame. I had a deep well socket and u-joint on an extension.

:hmm:

Thanks for the responses. The old cylinder is working so I will just leave it for now. I might try fitting a socket on it just to see if I missed something the first time around. Definately going to wait until it cools off outside though.
